Elephant Protection Association – Fighting for Elephants and Legal Ivory
Our Goal: Ending elephant poaching through economic policies that reward local communities for protecting elephants and deprive poachers of profit
We are proud to announce the launch of the Elephant Protection Association, a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting elephants. Founding members Doug Bandow, Sandra Brady, Rob Mitchell and Daniel Stiles joined together to advocate for sound economic policies that reward local communities for protecting elephants and deprive poachers of profit. They launched this effort in the face of a proposed Domestic Ivory Ban and other policies that would punish people who own or trade legal ivory in the United States while rewarding criminals with an ivory monopoly in Africa and Asia.
The Association seeks to build upon the coalition of ivory-related industries who wrote to USFWS on April 4, 2014. Our goal is to impress on governments and the public that no one has a greater interest in stopping criminals from poaching elephants than people who own legal ivory and businesses who trade in legal ivory.Instead of denying ivory’s intrinsic value worldwide, the Association advocates for policies and actions that align incentives of the people who live with the elephants and govern the land where they live with conservationists who want to protect elephants from extinction.
